It may be only one day long, but Franklin on Ice utilizes every minute to its fullest potential. There are fun activities for the families and live entertainment all day long. The action takes place downtown and centers around Fountain Park were ice carvers proudly display professional works of sculpted art. Carvers spend all day meticulously chiseling works of art out of blocks of ice. Make a point to show up to the park in the afternoon when the carvers switch gears and get ready for a speed carving contest.
Like all great festivals, Franklin on Ice takes its food very seriously. Start your festival experience with the buckwheat pancake and sausage breakfast, hosted by the Elks Club. The tangy flavor of buckwheat may be an acquired taste for many, but it is a welcomed and unique twist on the traditional festival breakfast. During the day, a chili cook-off between area restaurants boasts the best chili available! The contest tasting is open to all visitors. In the evening, downtown restaurants offer fine dining experiences with great deals in the spirit of the festivals
There is no shortage of entertainment at Franklin on Ice. Though only a day long, there are nearly a half dozen live bands and concerts playing at various venues throughout the town. In the evening, catch screenings of old movies at the local theatre. For the kids, there are fun activities at the library open house and a magician. Don’t miss the great indoor sidewalk sale. Downtown retailers on 13th Street and Liberty Street offer amazing deals all day long in the spirit of the festival.
