Since 1987, Mayfair Festival of the Arts has laid claim as the premier outdoors art festival; it is a moniker they scant hope to ever dismiss. For five days – the week before Memorial Day – Allentown is transformed into a creative and cultural oasis as Mayfair envelops the town with a sensory overload of delights. With street dancers, storytellers, the best in regional music, demonstrations, and plenty of amazing art, this festival is a must-see event that is sure to bring delight to all its visitors.
Award winning photography, amazing works of art, handmade jewelry of the most exquisite form – it is all at Mayfair. Artists tend to be of an especially high caliber and the vendor booths would surely look more like a museum exhibit if not for the festive and informal atmosphere. Through the week, various artists demonstrate their techniques and processes with expert skill and execution. Some booths are fully interactive and actually encourage visitors to make or design their own crafts. Some are musically inspired, and their work looks like gigantic explosions. Bottom line: this eclectic variety of art is a true cultural event.
Like any self-respecting street fair there is plenty of street food at Mayfair. In addition to the conventional foods often found, there are also homemade specialty foods, local bakeries pipe icing fresh onto delicious cupcakes, there are even vendors serving pooch treats for your most beloved pets! Soft pretzels, fresh made ice cream, giant turkey legs, even jambalaya – if you crave it, Mayfair has it. Perhaps more than any other single element, music is surely a hallmark of Mayfair. For the five day event there is music playing almost always at one place or another. In fact some acts overlap with other performances so visitors are better served to plan their trip so to ensure they see all the acts they want to.
Admission to the festival is nominal and five-day passes can be bought at the gate. Children are free. Parking is free but very limited.
