In this three hundred year history there have been multiple ferries and bridges connecting Wrightsville and Columbia, including what was at one point the world’s longest covered bridge at roughly a mile across. The latest artery is route 462 – The Veterans Memorial Bridge – and it is here at the bridge that the annual Wrightsville-Columbia Bridge Bust takes place. It is only natural that a festival like Bridge Bust would pay tribute to the lifeline which helps this town and area prosper. It just so happens the tribute is a great time!
Perhaps the greatest and certainly most unique aspect of Bridge Bust is its location. Traffic shuts down on the bridge for the one-day festivities. The scenery itself is absolutely breathtaking, with crystalline water and lush autumn foliage clearly visible on both sides of the bridge. There are of course the shopping tents for which Bridge Bust is so well attended. It is along the mile length of bridge that over 300 vendors selling art, crafts, and antiques so there is something for everyone. Food vendors and live entertainment are aplenty and keep the atmosphere light. But visitors take note; this is an extremely popular event drawing over twenty thousand. Crowds are to be expected.
