As festivals go, AQS Quilt Week is big and it is expertly organized. If you are a quilter, you need to get to this show. If you know someone who is a quilter you need to inform them of this show then accommodate them to it. This is it; the Mecca for quilters. The event lasts the better part of a week (as the name implies) but there are so many events and activities that it would take that long to experience it all. Depending on one’s zeal for the craft, you could plan an entire vacation around this show and not be bored once. In fact many have and continue to do so.
For starters, there are nearly fifty workshops Quilt Week, and they almost all sell out. Topics cover the broad range of color and pattern designs to the specialty techniques of piecing and applique. There are nearly a dozen lectures covering an even more wide range of quilting topics as the workshops. Specialty events throughout the week can include everything from author signings, special guest brunches, to expert roundtable reviews, and even humorous specialty variety shows. The Quilt Show also puts its resources to good use in the annual Quilt-A-Thon, a melee of quilting in which all are invited to join. Finished pieces are donated to local charities.
If you have a quilt, you should enter it for judging in Quilt Week. This show awards over fifty thousand dollars in cash prizes for everything from Best In Show to Best Hand Workmanship, Best Longarm Workmanship, and Best Wall quilts in the contest. Even if you don’t want to enter your handiwork, AS-certified quilt appraisers are available all week to appraise new and antique quilts at insurance costs and even market values. There are also over a hundred vendors offering the latest and most unique in all things quilts and quilting supplies.
