Celebrating exclusively the potato farmers ofCambria County’s might seem an overly ambitious niche market. Then you realize that Cambria County is the second largest supplier of potatoes in the state – and Pennsylvania grows a lot of potatoes. So it is, the annual Ebensburg Potatofest is held the last Saturday in September every year. At Potatofest the lionized spud is honored with expertly crafted culinary finesse, potato-themed fun, and great entertainment. This much beloved starch-king is just a good time in general.
Accentuating the fun at Potatofest is an arts and crafts show of more than two hundred vendors line the street for blocks through the town. Entertainers perform throughout the day between four stages placed through the festival. Everything from bluegrass to blues, to acoustic, to brass band is on display. Of course this is nothing to say of the children’s entertainment. Potatofest hosts a children’s performer every hour on the hour. This in addition to a tent full of activities, clowns, unicyclists, and bounce rides. The locally sponsored Potato Patch is another great kid activity not to be overlooked.
Potatofest is, well… a potato festival. So you better believe there’s potato “everything” to eat. Potato soup is the absolute best around, and being the end of September the ham and potato pot pie is almost sinfully good, as are the potato pancakes. Visitors would be remiss not to at least try the potato candy or homemade potato chips. If the starches haven’t kicked in by this point then try the homemade perogies or the festival favorite – potato pizza. Other more traditional fare is available such as roasted almonds, sandwiches, and homemade fudge. In conjunction with the food and festivities, the Dauntless Fire Company hosts a wine extravaganza in which almost a dozen wineries from the area participate.
Admission is free and parking is off-site with the tater express (shuttle) being free.
