Break the winter blues with the annual January Ice Jam. This festival is an absolute must for all bluegrass fans. Seemingly every bluegrass band from the tri-state area shows up for Ice Jam. Over a three day period, Ice Jam plays nonstop, with different bands taking the stage nearly every half hour. Whether you enjoy traditional, contemporary or gospel, there is a little bit of bluegrass for everyone.
What makes January Ice Jam so special is just how involved the music becomes. Bands are slated to appear, but novice musicians can bring their fiddles and banjoes too and make music. In addition to the main room, there are jamming rooms available for when the spirit hits. Of course, you don’t have to be a musician to get into the groove. This is a family friendly event, and everyone is encouraged to participate and get into the groove
Ice Jam is a bit like a commune, in that it almost springs organically. Many musicians at Ice Jam are professional but no band or person is compensated for their time or expenses. Instead, everyone who shows up does so purely for the love of music and collaboration, including the dozens of volunteers that run the festival. All the proceeds from Ice Jam go to support WYEP, a listener-supported bluegrass radio station.
Admission and parking is free. Hotel accommodations are available for visitors and musicians.
