The machines are all on display at the Luthersburg Spring Gas Up. Large powerhouses of industrial cultivating, these tractors are the backbone of farming life. Tractor shows have always been a staple of rural communities but the last few years have seen an explosion of interest in tractor shows and one of the more interesting and down-home examples is the Spring Gas Up. Sponsored by the Susquehanna Antique Machinery Assn., the Spring Gas Up is a great excuse to take a trip into PA’s rugged coal country and an even better opportunity to learn a little about machinery and have fun doing it!
Various craft and show activities run all weekend, but the festivities really heat up on Saturday and Sunday with the amazingly popular antique tractor pull. Old beauties take to the lawn to show off their still impressive versatility and endurance. For the kids, there is a pedal tractor pull, and for the amateur man or woman – the garden tractor pull. An impressive auction put antique farming equipment and machinery up on the block and is a must for history buffs and antique enthusiasts.
Even though the tractors have the biggest draw, there is an equally large audience clamoring for the great activities which are run in conjunction with the farm events. A respectably sized craft show has vendors on hand selling their art and wares. Annual quilters and yarn spinners are on hand, demonstrating their fibrous talents. The show’s beloved flea market is equally impressive in selection and dominating in stature. The best concessions converge on the event offering homemade foods which can’t be beat, and the famous homemade ice cream is definitely not to be missed.
