The alluring strawberry is traditionally a fruit of early summer in Pennsylvania, but the Peddler’s Village habitually has the jump on Mother Nature. Juicy and sweet, the annual Peddler’s Village Strawberry Festival has no shortage of those red plump berries! Started in 1979, this annual event continues to go strong and the festival shows no sign of stopping or slowing down. In fact, every year in early May, the Strawberry Festival draws crowds of thousands eager to enjoy an early spring harvest of the delicious fruit.
As far as food goes, Peddlers Village lays out the red carpet (so to speak) for that most bejeweled fruit. Natural, field fresh strawberries are available for purchase. Big baskets of them are in ready stock for eager visitors to buy and devour. For the delicate and sweet taste try chocolate-dipped berries, various strawberry pastries, cakes, and pies, jams, and smoothies. The Fritters are a festival favorite and definitely not to be missed.
In addition to the great fruit-foods, the Strawberry Festival showcases a juried craft show. Nearly fifty high-quality vendors from across the region converge on the festival to vie for top honors. The size of the show is intimate to say the least, but the selection is of a superb caliber. Both days of the festival hosts an extremely popular pie eating contest which is a blast to watch and even more fun to participate in. Sit with your favorite strawberry treats and munch along as willing contestants compete to gulp down their pies. Live music plays all weekend.
