Downtowns aren’t quite the thriving hubs of commerce and meeting like they used to be, so the town of Volant is pretty unique for maintaining its downtown business. Volant’s thirty-odd specialty merchants work in cooperation and support of one another to maintain this traditional style of commerce. It seems only natural then that each October many of these same specialty shops come together to sponsor and participate in the annual Volant Pumpkin Festival. For the festival, local businesses literally open their doors to host demonstrations and activities all weekend.
Saturday only, there are fresh Amish Donuts for sale and the fire department hosts a Chili Cook-Off. All weekend The Holy Orthodox Church serves its famous pumpkin rolls. Also, don’t miss the fudge-dipped apples and the outdoor barbeque. Take home a piece of the Volant Pumpkin Festival with locally harvested honey, homemade jams, fresh made apple butter, fresh-pressed cider, baked goods, or locally harvested produce.
The Volant Pumpkin Festival wouldn’t be complete without a large pumpkin patch – which it has! There are also hayrides for the family and a straw maze for kids. There is even a craft corner for kids where they can paint their own pumpkins and get Halloween tattoos. Saturday night, bundle up and catch a movie outside. And make reservations to join a special tea hour at the Volant Meeting House.
Everything at the festival is done with a focus on the community, from the local food to local sponsors. In this way the Volant Pumpkin Festival is a celebration of the town in all its uniqueness, all its sameness, and all the passion that keeps this little town thriving.
